| DB7 Zagato and DBAR1 (American Roadster 1) The DB7 Zagato was the result of a meeting between the head of Aston Martin and Zagato at the 2001 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Based on a shortened DB7 Vantage chassis, the car is elegant; the modifications to the rear are spectacular, featuring two round taillights set into a bulbous rear end, topped by a window shaped like a ski visor, with the double-hump roof—Zagato’s signature design. The prototype was unveiled at the 2002 Paris Motor Show and the 99 planned units were sold out very quickly, exclusively in Europe. Because the chassis modifications prevented the car from receiving U.S. certification (without undergoing a costly series of crash tests), Aston Martin and Zagato, to satisfy their disappointed American customers, introduced in 2003 the DB American Roadster 1 (DB AR1). Thus the chassis of the DB7 Vantage Volante remained unchanged, consequently longer than the DB7Z, featuring a roadster-style body, probably more consensual than the Coupe. A total of 99 units were produced, with a few eventually making their way to Europe. |
